Learn Yiddush

Message from Pat Larsen and the DU Center for Judaic Studies:

The ALEPH Institute for Jewish Culture, in association with the University of Denver’s Center for Judaic Studies, is offering community members a chance to immerse themselves in a broad study of Jewish cultural topics through a fun, low-cost educational program – open to all! The not-for-credit classes meet one night a week for 9 weeks, and to maintain the high educational standards of the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, all courses are taught by Center for Judaic Studies faculty members or PhD candidates. The enrollment fee is $150 per class.

Beginning January 5, 2006, associate professor of history and director of the Center for Judaic Studies, David Shneer, will offer an “Introduction to the Yiddish Language.” This fun immersion course will explore the basics of reading, speaking and understanding the language that has defined European Jewry for more than 1000 years. The class will be held each Thursday night through March 2, 2006 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Also on Thursday evenings, Dr. Caryn Aviv, assistant professor and Marsico Lecturer at the University of Denver and co-author of New Jews: The End of the Jewish Diaspora will be teaching Jewish Diasporas/Jewish Homelands from 6-7 p.m.

All courses are held on the University of Denver campus, and are open to the general public. Courses will be limited to 30 students. To secure your space contact Pat Larsen at 303-871-3020. Additional information is available at www.du.edu/cjs.
